Condition of the Stump
As the connecting point between the prosthesis and Your body, the stump is very important. Examine it carefully every day and if You notice persistent redness or pain, contact Your Prosthetic Technician.Such inconvenience can often be corrected with slight changes to the settings of the prosthesis.
Swelling and Fluctuations in Size
The size of the stump often changes, especially in the first stages. If the size of Your stump changes, the volume usually needs to be corrected by adding or removing the number of the prosthetic socks.
If You don’t use such socks, fix an appointment with Your Prosthetic Technician.
Heel Height
Your prosthesis is intended to be worn with a certain shoe height.Switching to a taller or shorter heel could provoke a range of different problems: from discomfort to safety issues, depending on the type of prosthesis Your wear.
Talk to Your Prosthetic Technician before changing the height of Your shoes.
Prosthetic Socks and Gel Socks
Your Prosthetic Technician could recommend that You wear a prosthetic sock or a special gel sock. Prosthetic socks could be of different thickness, i.e. have a different number of layers. As the stump decreases in size, additional layers could be added so that the socket could fit perfectly.
For example, if You wear a three-layer sock on top of it (in total 4 layers) and the socket is loose, You could add an additional one-layer sock or remove all and put on one five-layer sock.
For some, the multiple sock layers could limit the capacity to feel the limb in the socket.
If something concerns You, contact Your Prosthetic Technician and schedule an examination to discuss the situation.
- Remember to record the size of the sock and the number of socks at the initial fitting.
- Follow the changes in the number of layers and report these changes in number to Your Prosthetic Technician at the next examination.
